The History Of The Sport Of Football
American football as we know it came about in the year 1879 and was developed by a man named Walter Camp. Walter Camp was a coach and player at Yale in the 19th century. Camp was born in 1859 in the United States and was in attendance at Yale University from 1876 until the year 1882.
American football has its roots in soccer and rugby. Camp changed rules of the other games to come up with American football. Some rules he changed that led to American football were to introduce a line of scrimmage, allowing one team to keep possession of the ball and creating the center and quarterback positions.Additional information can be found at http://www.sportsviews.com/blog/80711/Watch_Germany_vs_USA_live_streaming-_Live_IFAF_World_Championship_of_American_Football_2011_Online_PC_HD_TV. Camp also decreased the amount of players from 15 to 11 on each side of the ball.
American football soon started to gain in popularity in the United States and the National Football League was created in 1920. With the rise of the National Football League and the growing popularity of the sport, American football went from being a regional sport to a national sport. Football rivalries developed at the college level first. There were some fierce rivalries like Harvard vs Yale and Georgia vs Auburn. A lot of these rivalries that developed in the late 19th and early 20th century still exist today.
Football continued to gain in popularity and a rival professional league was created in the late 1950s. This league was known as the American Football League and was created in part because NFL owners didn’t want to expand their league. The AFL and the NFL would merge into one league in the 1960s and the championship between the two leagues was named the World Championship. In just two years the World Championship was changed to the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl has gone on to be the most popular sporting event in history of sport.
